Thomas Michael Dowdney, 18, of Chickerell Road, Weymouth, died after being involved in a car crash on the Weymouth to Bridport coast road last October. Mr Johnston yesterday recorded a verdict of accidental death following an inquest at Dorchester. He heard that Thomas Dowdney was a front seat passenger in a Ford Escort which lost control on a sharp bend near Bagwell Farm and collided with an oncoming Vauxhall Astra. The Escort driver, Matthew James Taylor, 18, had passed his test only weeks earlier.
The inquest heard the Ford Escort had been overtaken by a Vauxhall Astra, driven by Alexander Ian Sumner, 20, moments before the collision. Mr Johnston said evidence led him to believe Mr Sumner had been travelling 'far quicker' than the road's 60mph limit. He ruled out the possibility that the two cars touched before the accident. Both Mr Sumner and Mr Taylor, 18, may face court proceedings, the inquest was told. The pair declined to give evidence, but in a police statement Mr Taylor, of Weymouth, said he had speeded up after being overtaken by Mr Sumner.
He added that his inexperience caused him to lose control after seeing the bend too late. Escort passenger Matthew James Fox, 18, of Chickerell, recalled seeing the lit headlamps of Mr Sumner's car close behind the vehicle he was travelling in. But they told the inquest Mr Sumner's overtaking manoeuvre had been smooth. Mr Johnston praised the three teenagers for helping the victims of the collision.
